Jamie Oliver is a renowned chef and food activist, who is currently best known for his prime time show on ABC, Jamie Oliver’s Food Revolution. He was awarded the prestigious TED prize in February of 2010, and as part of that prize selection, he had the opportunity to present his acceptance speech. This was given just at the conclusion of the first season of the Food Revolution TV show. Jamie stands up in front of the audience and instead of talking about himself and lauding his own accomplishments, he instead tells the story about his wish for the children of the US and the for the world itself.
This is an powerful and moving video and I fully support him in his wish.
I wonder what the world would be like if we could all decide to work together, and with a concerted effort to make his wish into a reality…
I wasn’t aware of the short life spans earlier generations are creating for us in just the food industry. Many other countries follow right behind America in populations overweight. With Jamie’s food revolution he wants to make it relevant to people the facts of the world now days. People need to be aware of food culture and know what they are eating. This relates into creating our world into a more sustainable society. If we were more aware of our environment and preserving our earth and economy. We could learn that within buying mass produced food we are paying to kill ourselves over time.
I believe this quote from an earlier blog helps to show what Mercedez is saying. “The superior man seeks what is right; the inferior man, what is profitable.” Basically, people are trying to save money on poor quality food, rather than spending the extra dollar on good food. This is ultimately costing people more in medical bills and costing them their good health.
I think his mission is awesome! and i wish that more people were aware of the severe dangers in the food industry today. I think that his program should be shown to more people so they can realize the harsh reality of the food we are actually eating because i think there is a big difference in what we are actually eating than what we think we are eating and i dont think it is expressed clearly enough
Jamie Oliver made me realize how big of an impact diet makes on our life span. I think that he is a very influential individual and his mission has definitely changed people’s lives and dietary routines. However so many people say they need to make a change in what they eat yet they don’t and unfortunately end up killing themselves because of it. What I do not understand is that it is very easy for people to know what is healthy and what is not but people still continue to put it in their bodies. I believe that if people begin to be educated about food and actually work towards keeping a healthy diet then making a difference can become possible.
I’m so glad that someone is standing up to educate people about the problem of America’s bad diet! What Jamie Oliver is trying to do is really very remarkable, obviously his goal will take a long time to be accomplished but everything has to start somewhere. I think what the main problem with obesity though is not really the companies, but the lack of education about what people are eating. As a consumer I can honestly say I don’t know much about what everything on a food label means, I just trust that if the box says low fat then its low fat and therefore healthy. Most likely I have been wrong though. Nutritional education can be extremely influential and should be something of importance to all.
Jamie Oliver’s words really do have the potential to make a difference in our society. His message helped me understand that produced food can really have an impact on your life. Many people do not realize what they are eating and how it can affect their life in such a negative way. His video can actually make a difference in people’s lives because they can finally be aware of what they are eating. When people start to finally learn about this processed food and how it is very harmful, it can maybe finally start making a difference. His video can reach out to people and help them so they can be aware of what they are putting into their bodies.
I really enjoyed this video, Jamie really tells the truth that so many people so easily over look theses days. He is so right in the fact that America is the leading country in obesity and beginning the revolution for change but not only in obesity but in many other aspects of our lives today. Environmentally if people were eating less fatty foods more of the natural products bought and made in america would be used and put to a better use then just sitting and roughing in stores. It would be a better idea to uses what we have right in front of uses especially if it betters the nation as a whole by lowering a great cause for death.
This video really has the power to make a huge impact on people if they take the time to watch it. Jamie’s eye- opening message helps to educate people on the negative affects that certain foods can have on your body. By watching this video, people are more aware of the tolls an unhealthy diet can take on your body and can therefore make the span of their life longer by changing their dieting habits. Hopefully by opening the eyes of his viewers to the fact that America has the leading number of obese people in the country, and by explaining ways in which you can make healthier dieting choices, more people will work to decrease the statistics.
Jamie Oliver has great ideas. His wish for the future isn’t impractical. Educating children is certainly neccessary and it makes sense. His idea on fast food is going to be tough, as well as his idea of fixing school lunches. The unhealthy choices are easier. But no question, these ideas would make a difference. And it is no small issue. It is life or death for some people and they need to pay attention to what they eat. Jamie’s ideas need to be put to action.
I agree with Jackson that Jamie Oliver’s ideas are great, while at the same time totally practical. I belive that through educating students and youngsters of the values of having healthier eating habits is necisarry for the future because if we don’t choose to educate them, they will choose to eat unhealthy fun just like many generations before them. Also Jamie’s decision not to speak of himself but instead speak about an issue very important about him says a lot about his charcter and shows how much he longs for healthier eating habits for all.
Personally, I really like Jamie Oliver and i agree with everyone about how influential he is and that is great because the children of America really need a strong advocate like Jamie. Just like Andrew and others said, a huge part of the fight against childhood obesity is education. This is something that Jamie definitely understands and has been able to do through his television show. I think that his influence will encourage people to buy fresh foods and buy locally which will help the environment.
I agree with Catherine completely, Jamie really looks at many different demographics here Catherine look mostly at the kids who are over weight because of what they ate. the first time in looked at this video i only looked at the over all picture and proposal. I think its important to look deeper in the subject and find little things a lot of people can do.
I have to agree with everyone else here. Jamie Oliver has fantastic ideas and I respect his opinions. I am glad to finally see someone stepping up and trying to fight against obesity. Many children in America are growing up obese and they need guidance and direction to get back on the right path to being healthy. Oliver’s ideas and effort to change the food systems in schools to be healthier are great and should be spread all over the world. Like Andrew said, him talking about wanting kids to be healthy instead of talking about himself when accepting his award did show a lot about his good character and thoughtfulness.
I was very impressed with his effectiveness as a speaker at such a young age. His initial statements were clear, blunt, and definitely got my attention. The fact that he was able to personalize his arguments by pointing out people in the audience, asking them to raise their hands if they had children, visiting West Virginia and meeting families…etc. makes his argument much more relatable upfront, which draws even more attention to the problem at hand. The thing that I took away most from his speech is when he said that the education of good nutrition and what it does for the body MUST be taught in schools. Practicing good nutrition is a lifestyle, not just a passing phase like a class that you take once and then forget. Therefore, I would argue that food education is just as important, if not more so, than your regular science, math, or english classes and should be mandatory in the curriculum. By educating the youth, the knowledge that they acquire is passed on through generations, which brings us closer to solving the problem of obesity altogether.
I think it’s great that Jamie Oliver wants to fix school lunches and make them healthier. The diet and obesity problem is also related to eating at fast food restaurants. I think that if healthier foods are served at school lunch, kids will learn at a younger age how to eat healthy. It would be great if kids learned earlier how important it is to eat healthier food versus fast food so that they can keep these eating habits throughout their life.
I agree with Fallon and many others above. Jamie Oliver said education is what will help our world fight obesity and that is completely true. Many kids have eating habits like they do because of their lack of education of what to eat and where from! For me it was simple because my mother is a dietician so i always had the background but even for me i see other kids who have absolutely no idea what they are consuming which causes a problem such as obesity. With kids being educated, they will then know where to buy foods and kind of foods to eat to be healthy which will also help the environment because more foods will be local and organic, giving a healthy outlook on the environment and its surroundings.
I feel as though the idea of our generation not living as long as our parents generation has been touched on throughout our lifetime but not truly focused on. It’s true and a scary, very real statistic that our world let alone kids within a 10 year radius of us our extremely overweight. It seems as while the thought of trying to tell kids that one should love who they are and be okay with who they are and how they look and i agree completely. However, there is a difference in telling somebody who is healthy and telling somebody who is extremely overweight. The people who make up these very obese stats need help. Our society has treated obesity as a back seat compared to other diseases, I think because most of the time obesity is caused by an individual and cancer and other diseases are not. It’s about time that people realize there must be drastic changes, health wise, if they want to survive past 60 years old.
I really love where alex takes this video and understands it differently. Its so true that our generation has grown up constantly hearing to love themselves no matter what. The fact is that great like alex says if that person is happy and in a good state of body and mind. If they aren’t that allows them to think that eating unhealthy is ok and eventually for there own kids it will be ok. That is however if they get to have kids if we allow this to keep going there will come a point where we wont be old enough to even reach that stage of our live and that fact is just sad.
I completely agree with you…the problem of obesity needs to stop being tip-toed around and be seen for what it truly is…a problem. Because of the nature of obesity, given that it can more or less be controlled by the individual, as a society we are much more careful with addressing it so as not to “offend” anyone. I truly think this is wrong. That is not to say that obese people are to be scrutinized, but they should be pushed to make better choices and enact a change in their lifestyle…it’s not acceptable really.
I agree with Allie. It wouldn’t just be a class that one takes to simply pass. Valuable lessons to change lifestyles are priceless and are something students might not realize the practicality of until later in life. Regardless, the point made by Jamie Oliver on education is backed with his own research and is clearly a main point to take away from the presentation.
This really just puts a question into my mind: Why doesn’t Parish grow at least SOME food? How much money could we save? How much more could we teach, especially for the younger science classes that love their demonstrative teaching? How much healthier could we be, as a community?
It would probably taste better too. To me it seems like a cost issue more than anything else. Parish does not want to spend money on facilities required to grow the food on a large enough scale to matter. I would like to see it happen though, and maybe they could even have electives in which students learned how to properly farm for food.
Why would we need facilities? Farms should be outside, and Parish has plenty of open space that’s more or less un-used. As for resource cost . . . 1,000 seeds, and a one-time-cost of a farming tool set wouldn’t cost that much. Each 3rd grade science class could easily grow and maintain a crop, and each different grade could grow and maintain a different crop.
Farming would provide a low-cost teaching tool, plus it would provide a cheap SUPPLEMENT to student’s diets. I don’t know so much if Parsh would save much money in the short term, but I have a hard time imagining they would lose enough money to not consider doing it.
Zander that is a really interesting idea. There is definitely plenty of space for Parish to start farming some of their own fruits and vegetables. It might be more difficult to raise any farm animals but that could be accomplished with time. Not only would it help our community as a whole but it would be teaching students of all ages that they don’t need to buy all their food, they can grow it themselves. Our society is so focused around agriculture, why do we not teach it in school?
I LOVE THIS IDEA. I just wish we had this throughout our years at Parish and hopefully they really do put a program like this into place. Not only does it give students a chance to just be outside more, but it allows all of us the opportunity to learn about the environment in a hands on way where we can actually SEE the changes we are making. Awesome idea.
I agree with Cameron. Zander when you say “how much money could we save?” I’m thinking in the long run–yes, this would save Parish money. On the other hand, in the short run–no, Parish would have to spend more money than they are already spending to build facilities, buy resources, etc. I think that little kids would enjoy watching their food grow, and parents would enjoy knowing that what their kids are eating is largely grown at Parish.
The idea is great Zander. Unfortunately, it really isn’t practical in terms of cost. It would probably cost more to purchase too. I agree with Connor that it would be way to expensive in the short term. But, it would be nice if food was grown and prepared at school.
I’m not envisioning something that would be super pricey at all. If you think about it, all we would need is simple garden tools….seeds, shovels..etc. and a roped off place to do so. Like anything else, it could start small and then grow to become bigger.
Exactly. Seeds are incredibly cheap. Here are 1000 for six dollars.

We’re not talking about a massive money crunch here. We wouldn’t be paying for labor, which is what all the big companies’ budgets go to. We wouldn’t be paying for mass amounts of fertilizer or pesticides and herbicides, because we would be focusing on working green.
There’s a reason big companies spend tons of money to make tons of money. It’s not because of what they use on one small patch of their land. It’s because they have thousands of acres of land, atop dozens of crop rotations every year atop all the resources they use over all of their land. In small scenarios, like the one we would have at Parish if we started simply and small, it would cost very, very little in the grand scheme of things.
Zander these are great questions to ask the community around us. Parish has no real education on health and food especially in the younger grades. In order to avoid obesity for the future of our nation we need to educate. Also growing our own food is an awesome idea. We have so many clubs in our community but nothing for growing maybe our own lettuce or vegetables ect. for our lunch lines. I think these are awesome ways to be effective in our community!!!!
Zander brought up some very good questions! I would be happy to see that Parish is also taking that extra step to make kids healthier while being “green” at the same time. I think that if we started a community garden of some sort at Parish that we could show all the lower school kids, I think that would carry on with the kids and they would think it’s kind of a way of life. This could influence these kids to also grow their food, such as tomatoes, carrots, and other vegetables, in a garden of their own when they grow up.
This would be great, but there are issues of space and money. Parish has a lot of land, but has exhausted most of it already; there would be a substantial upstart cost to the farming as well, which I am not sure that the school would be willing to finance. The idea is great, but implementing it is the hard part.
Even if we couldn’t start a community garden at the Midway campus, it could always be put at the Hillcrest campus. This could especially help to reach out to the younger kids and spark an immediate interest with them. Everyone knows that they look up to the older kids, and if they see us growing our own food, then they will want to do the same. If we could somehow work a day or two every month to go visit the campus and show them how to grow fruits and veggies, then that could go a long way for each one of them in the future.
I think its a great idea to start growing our own stuff and i know that Mr. Cohen is trying to work on that but i think that everyone should help out! because i know I’m not the only one who would like some better quality options in the cafeteria, but not just in the cafeteria, in life i would like to drive down a street and NOT see a McDonald’s on every corner or a Wendy’s or whatever because it just makes it that much easier and convenient to get bad food. If you can even call it food. I think that is a huge Problem with America is that Bad food options are made WAY to convenient and the good food options are less convenient and in some cases more difficult to find! Shouldn’t it be the other way around?
As some of the people before me stated, I also think that it would be great if Parish started a program where we generated our own food source. Jamie Oliver really has an understanding of America’s health problems, and after watching some episodes of his TV show it is evident that he truly cares about health and safety of others. I know that our school has taken an effort to provide healthier food items for students, but I still think that we can do better. We could take some of Oliver’s ideas and utilize them here. I’ve said it before in some of my other posts but we need to work together as a community if we are going to fix an issue.
I love that Arden brought up McDonald’s because the whole time I was watching this video I was thinking of the movie Super Size Me. When watching this movie I always found myself being extremely motivated to never eat fast food again but this clearly was not reality. It’s almost embarrassing how the world views America on this problem. The thing is though we can’t just jump into forcing people to eat healthy and give up the foods that are easy to get/make and that they love. It’s a bigger problem then just not eating healthy. It’s also Americans being lazy. To fix the unhealthy food problem we must first some how get America to stop being to lazy. Sure, getting schools to adapt healthier foods to give to students and changing the fries at McDonalds to apple slices is a good start, but I think it’s a lot more of a challenge then everyone here realizes.
I do believe that an active lifestyle plays a huge role in somebody’s health, and America’s future generations aren’t looking much more active. More and more schools are taking gym away and causing students to live a less active lifestyle. The NFL is taking a stand against this problem through Keep Gym in School. The NFL is raising money to help schools around the country from cutting gym class out of their budget. Many districts think that gym is something that isn’t need in school, but it really is. Being active at a young age sets a habit that will most likely be followed later on in life.
It is a scary wake-up call to hear that the food we eat is killing us. Its embarrassing that we are the unhealthiest, fattest country and the majority of society does nothing about it. Due to the food I’m eating, I might live ten years less than my parents! That’s scary and wrong. But like Teal said, so many of us acknowledge the fact we need to change our eating habits but do nothing about it. It’s sad that 10% of healthcare coverage is obesity. While its sad that people are overweight and children are dying so young from it, people can’t let themselves get to that state of being! You can do something to prevent it. It’s not just a curse that you’ve suddenly been diagnosed with like cancer. It happens due to the choices you make and personally, it frustrates me that people don’t do anything about it and let the bad habits keep getting the best of them when they know that it is wrong and they are miserable every day. Foods with color, exercising even if its walking around the block for 15 minutes, and not sneaking food out of the fridge at 2:30 in the morning can all do a little bit to help people with obesity. It’s not that hard, they can do it. It’s hard for friends and family to watch a loved one waste away their life sitting on a couch, not going outside, and not even living. Obesity is a problem and one that really gets to me. I’m glad that people like Jamie Oliver are out there to bring this issue to attention with a charged, motivated attitude.
I agree with all of your points. Simply walking around the block once a day or going for a short bike ride can make a huge difference in your health. People need to take a step back and examine if they are living the way that they really want to. And other little things like replacing sodas with water can improve health levels tremendously.
As Meghan said, the movie Super Size Me obviously did not have the same impact it did on her than it did to the rest of America. Not only are people extremely lazy but it is the cheapness factor as well that contributes to these Americans poor life changing decisions. Only if they knew they could be purchasing cheap grocery store products and make a healthy home cooked meal. It’s disgusting how so many people have the knowledge about how unhealthy fast food is but continue to eat it because they are simply too lazy. For the uneducated about food health, it is our job to educate them and hope they will begin making smarter decisions as to what they decide to put in their bodies.
I wasn’t aware that diet related deaths were so high. I didn’t know that the medical bills from poor diets were so high as well. It’s scary to think that the next generation is going to live 10 years less than their parent’s generation. Everyone thinks that the advances in medicine is going to increase the life span of people in the future, but it’s our own diets that are going to shorten that life span. I think more schools should teach Home Education classes, teaching how to cook and prepare healthy meals at home. People think there isn’t enough time to run home and make a quick meal, so instead they go to McDonalds or the nearest fast food restaurant.
Jamie Oliver is another man in our society trying to change the world on his own. I truly believe that his heart is in the right place and he is headed in the right direction so far. As he said in his speech, education is the key to change. Oliver’s show, Jamie Oliver’s Food Revolution, is the first step for educating Americans. Proof that most Americans were not fully aware of the problems at hand lies simply in these previous blog posts. Many of them have started by saying something along the lines of, “I had no idea…” which proves Oliver is starting in the right place. If everyone was just more aware of the situation at hand people would be much less likely to eat so unhealthily and prevent their children from the fate they are currently facing.
Thinking about Jamie Oliver’s plan it is definitely a huge step towards a change in making a difference, however to completely diminish the problem is irrational. At least his mission has impacted enough people to turn their lives around. Hopefully one day he can completely eliminate obesity in America.
Is it really HIS responsibility, Jamie Oliver’s responsibility, to eliminate obesity in America? Or does the blame and the necessary impetus for change have to come from somewhere else? Please qualify your thoughts a bit more for me — how is he “diminishing the problem” and what have you seen that suggests that his mission has impacted anyone in the US to turn around their lives? Someone, show me some facts!
Jamie Oliver alone isn’t going to make an impact what so ever in changing America’s eating habits. However, the facts and resources he uses during his speechs are very shocking to the people viewing them. The facts that he presents are very frightening and they are potentially scaring people into a healthy lifestyle. When Oliver can change one person’s life, that person’s new healthier habits will spread to their friends and family.
No this is not Jamie Oliver’s responsibilty, but rather every individual’s responsibilty. Everyone in their own community has the ability to make a difference and Jamie Oliver is just demonstrating his thoughts for us to follow his footsteps and make a difference. He is perhaps diminishing the problem in some way, he is causing us to rethink our daily lives, have schools rethink their education, and communities rethink their way mangaging sustainabilty for the environment. Although he is not the way to solving the problem but he is definitely a step closer.
Teal, I believe that Jamie Oliver’s plan isn’t to defeat obesity all by himself, I believe his plan is for it to be a big human effort by all of humanity. If we all work together to defeat Obesity in America, change will have truly come. Jamie Oliver’s initiative to defeat obesity is truly inspirational and ambitious. Teal, I too believe that Jamie Oliver should accomplish his goal of defeating obesity.
Basically, Jamie Oliver is encouraging all of us-the young people of today’s world-to try to do something about obesity. It is not one person’s responsibility, but rather everyone should try to help to eliminate it. That way, it is accomplished faster, and people work together doing it.
I really enjoyed this video- Jamie Oliver has some pretty great ideas. However, I don’t think America will ever follow through with his ideas for fast food or his ideas for fixing school lunches. People are always going to go for the easier route, which is unfortunately, the unhealthy one. Kids like junk food and always will. Even at Parish, a school full of healthy choices, the cookies on Tuesdays and Thursdays FLY OFF THE RACK. I don’t think Oliver is going to win that battle. Nevertheless, I do believe if some of Oliver’s ideas were tested and enforced then America could become healthier. It is definitely a risk worth taking.
Olivia, i disagree, I believe that with a can-do-attitude, anything is possible including Americans following through on the ideas to lay off fast food and fixing school lunches, for example if the government were to tax unhealthy fast food chains for being unhealthy, they would be less incline to give us unhealthy food, and the solution to lunch is simple, just stop offering school lunches and require everyone bring their own lunch, it saves tax dollars and makes people healthier, Everybody wins.
I agree a with the both Andrew and Oliva. I think that it is possible for America to get healthier but I also know that people like what is bad for them. Having seen Jamie’s show he is really more about the ingredients of food. Olivia you commented about the cookies at school, i think that Jamie knows that kids will always want cookies but his focus is on making them healthier with natural ingredients rather than processed and chemically modified.
Olivia I definitely think Americans will follow his ideas about school lunches and fast food. So many people already have! And lots of schools are switching to healthier foods. Yes Parish has cookies, but they redid our entire lunch menu in attempts at making it healthier. That act alone shows that we do care about what we’re eating and parents have concerns for their kids diets.
Obviously people will always love cookies, who doesn’t? I think that Jamie Oliver is simply trying to improve eating habits among Americans. Certainly having cookies twice a week is not an unhealthy diet. Jamie is teaching kids and parents about the things that they eat every day; fast food, pizza, fried chicken etc. Those things are easily replaceable by healthier substitutions. And an occasional cookie never hurt anyone.
Well Parish’s cookies do taste pretty darn good and why shouldn’t people be able to have a few bad things every now and then. I generally eat pretty healthy, but no one can stop me from having a hamburger, french fries, or a good dessert every now or then. I think that Jamie Oliver simply wants people to make the right choices. Eating healthy does not necessarily mean eating broccoli or carrots all the time, but just eating in moderation. This means cutting out a lot of junk food and fast food, but not necessarily all of it.
Cameron i completely agree with you. You cant take out all bad foods from your life and there is really no need, unless your a bodybuilder. Everyone eats bad food every once in a while but moderation is the key word. Jamie Oliver is not telling us to take out all bad foods but rather make better choices. So maybe instead of fast food choose a healither option that is just as quick. There are many options. The main cause for obesity is not eating a cookie or french fries every so often but eating those things all the time. If one monators his daily consumption and makes sure he is moderately eating bad food then obesity will be avoided which I believe Jamie Oliver is trying to state.
I really enjoyed this speech because he shows the evidence that the common knowledge of food only 20-35 years ago, surpassed our generations’ knowledge by leaps and bounds. The fact that 1st graders didn’t know what a tomato, a potato, an eggplant or an onion are absolutely shocked me. I was raised with cooking and have a basic understanding of good food, and have a had a difficult time finding friends who also have this knowledge.
When Mr.Oliver talked about the trio of issues that have led to the downfall of food has led me to think about food here at Parish, Chartwells. Chartwells’ food has recently made decisions to provide healthier options for food, but ave lost the taste that they had with certain meals. Im curious to hear other opinions about chartwells in relation to this culinary topic.
Some time ago I read in the news that Mexico was the country with the largest obese population in the world. I found this article from CNN. “According to the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development, 69.5% of the Mexican population aged 15 and older is overweight or obese. This is the highest rate in the world, even higher than in the United States — which historically had the highest rate — and the United Kingdom, which has the highest in Europe.”
I really hope that Jamie Oliver is successful in his campaign to eliminate obesity and that it spreads to Mexico and to the world. I believe that through food education obesity can be reduced but I also think that through physical activity or daily exercise obesity can also be eliminated. It is really important to start a new culture of healthy eating, and that we stop eating greasy food.
http://articles.cnn.com/2011-01-04/world/mexico.obesity_1_obesity-rates-obese-people-junk-food?_s=PM:WORLD
Mr. Cohen, it is most definitely not Jamie Oliver’s responsibility. It is all of ours! We all must come together and fix the problem as a community. Although nobody is required or forced to help stop obesity, there are the people like Jamie Oliver who notice that this is actually a big problem that needs to be fixed, and it’s those people who step up and lead us in the right direction. I have watched his show on TV a few times before. I think, it’s great! He goes to a variety of schools and learns about their food system. Then he offers a new menu for the kids and tries to make everyone eat healthier, a big step towards the end to obesity. I think that as long as he keeps going to different schools around the country, and hopefully around the world, this will make a huge impact and it will influence other schools to join in too.
Eric, I definitely agree with you. I see Jamie Oliver as the person bringing the issue to the public forum, not the resolver. While he explains some options to help start the food revolution, he cannot do this task by himself. We need to participate and add our piece to make the dream possible and hopefully a reality.
Eric i agree with you too i dont think that it is everyones responsibility to fix this fast growing problem. I think the people should stop and “look down at their plates” and seriously think about what they are eating, i mean granted obviously people should still enjoy little splurges in life like a piece of cake on your best friends birthday or those oh so delicious cookies in the cafeteria that every one loves so much. But i just think that it needs to be balanced out and whats sad is that sometimes the unhealthy items are cheaper than the healthy items… people who cant afford alot should not be forced into choosing the bad options because they simply cant afford the healthy ones ESPECIALLY IF THEY WANT A CHANGE! i think that is one of the biggest tragedys in America
Its like that couple in the video we watched in class, They honestly didnt want to be unhealthy with their food but they were forced too because they didnt have enough money to do so otherwise. Whats most unfortunate is that fast food companies THRIVE off of these types of people so i think something should be done to help them out because they are the ones who are truely suffering and most of the time it isnt even their fault.
I think that not having enough money to buy healthy food is a valid reason most of the time. I remember in Food, Inc. that we watched in class, one lady said that a McDonald’s meal costs like $4 where as fruit and veggies for the family could cost more than $10. In this instance, it makes since because it is better to be fat and alive than fit and starving. However, for people who have the means to buy healthy food, they should definitely do so.
The fast food meals people eat everyday are not thought of as a threat to anyone, or so we think. The reality is the meat purchased and the burgers made everyday could potentially hurt us in the future with diabetes, medical bills, and other concerns that should not be on the list. The matter of fact is eating unhealthy can be prevented, but can anyone put the work in to accomplish this task. well i agree with Jamie and fully support his fight with healthier meals for younger children.
This mans ideas are great. The ideas he instilled for the future aren’t particularly impossible either. I like how he says educating children is certainly necessary because thats where it all starts. Making unhealthy choices in today’s society are certainly easy without a doubt considering fast food and school lunches. His ideas would certainly make a difference and need to be put into action soon. This is a big issue thats needs to be confronted because it can be life or death for some people.
Cameron i completely agree i totally think that people who are capable and have the means to buy and eat healthy foods should do so. It is so crucial to be healthy and to make a concious effort to remain healthy throughout your life. With Jamie Olivers ideas i think that everyone can learn to be healthier and stay that way
Fast food industries are storming with profit and success, but are other normal people happy about eating fast food everyday? Eating healthier and going out of the way to buy better foods for individuals is always better than taking the easy way out. The easy way out being ordering out and being too lazy to cook or buy the better nutrition a person should have. Hopefully nobody ever has to resort to fast food for three meals a day because of money problems or self laziness
George, the idea of providing better food is great, but if we have no knowledge of cooking besides using a microwave or “just add water” frozen meals. Theoretically, you can give a family all the healthy food they would need for years, but the lack of knowledge on how to cook the food would lead to the decay of the food due to stagnation. What needs to happen is that families return to local cooking. I remember in elementary school that there were cake and chili cookoffs. This 10 year change from community cooking to where someone can find a freeze-dried version of the meal on a supermarket shelf is causing a shift from natural food to processed food.
George is right there are normal people who make the easy choice to eat fast food everyday… im not saying cut it out of your diet completely but eat it in moderation, like start with once a week then move to once every other week and so on and so forth until you feel that you are eating better and feeling better
I have been following some of jamie ollivers tv shows thorughout the years. He preaches a powerfull message of healthyness and prosperity. Also, he talks about the dangers and harmfull effects of the food we eat today. The food we choose to eat has an extreme effect on our environment and our bodies (not to mention our life span). Keep up the good work Jamie!
I like what Arden said about fast food. I completely agree that everything is good in moderation. This does not only apply to eating more healthy, but even energy conservation, and the use of reusable materials. I also think that families living on a fast food diet think that, eating that way is the easiest, and cheapest way for them to eat but in reality that is not true at all. In fact, locally grown fruits and vegetables for a family of five probably cost less than the average happy meal.
While the price might be around the same price, I feel that the real reason people eat at Mcdonalds so much is because of the fast service. I mean when Im in lacrosse season fast food is my savior because before practice I can go grab a meal in 10-15 min. Where as I wouldn’t be able to go to fix a nice meal from the farmers market in the same time period!
If we could get green houses built for all school and incorporate them with the teachings in science classes grades K-12 the opportunity for children to have an early understanding for growing food would be remarkable. At my old public we had a greenhouse. It wasn’t kept very well because the kids didn’t seem to care or understand the importance. With what was said above about working with the little kids at the Hillcrest campus I think this would have a positive effect on our future. We can encourage those who already look up to us.
